چکیده

PURPOSE To compare higher order aberrations (HOA) in AcrySof SN60AT and Acrysof IQ SN60WF intraocular lenses (IOLs) and natural crystalline lenses in an age-matched population. METHODS Sixty-nine eyes of 55 patients were examined. Group I included AcrySof spheric lenses, group II AcrySof aspheric lenses, and group III included patients with the natural crystalline lens. The HOA data were obtained with a LADARWave aberrometer (Alcon Inc.). Analysis was based on the RMS of coma, spherical aberrations (SA), and HOA. Statistical comparisons were performed with Kruskal Wallis variance analysis. RESULTS In the case of coma, there were statistically significant differences between spheric and aspheric AcrySof (p<0.005) and between spheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lenses (p<0.005). The differences between aspheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lens group were not significant (p>0.05). SA were significantly different between spheric and aspheric AcrySof group, and spheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lens group (p<0.005), as well as between aspheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lens group (p<0.05). In case of HOAno significant differences were observed between aspheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lens group (p>0.05), but differences between groups AcrySof spheric and aspheric, and spheric AcrySof and natural crystalline lens, showed high significance (p<0.005). CONCLUSIONS The AcrySof Natural IQ aspheric model SN60WF IOL did not change the optical quality of vision compared to a healthy population of 60-80 years of age. The AcrySof Natural model SN60AT spherical IOL resulted in higher HOAs relative to both the natural crystalline lens population and eyes after aspheric AcrySof IQ model SN60WF IOL implantation.

Optical quality and depth-of-field of eyes implanted with spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE To compare experimental optical performance in eyes implanted with spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS Corneal, total, and internal aberrations were measured in 19 eyes implanted with spherical (n=9) and aspheric (n=10) IOLs. Corneal aberrations were estimated by virtual ray tracing on corneal elevation maps, and total aberrations were measured using a second-gen...

Comparison of retinal image quality with spherical and customized aspheric intraocular lenses

We hypothesize that an intraocular lens (IOL) with higher-order aspheric surfaces customized for an individual eye provides improved retinal image quality, despite the misalignments that accompany cataract surgery. To test this hypothesis, ray-tracing eye models were used to investigate 10 designs of mono-focal single lens IOLs with rotationally symmetric spherical, aspheric, and customized sur...

Comparison of the optical image quality in the periphery of phakic and pseudophakic eyes.

PURPOSE The natural lens may provide some compensatory optical effect in the periphery. When it is substituted by an IOL during cataract surgery, the quality of the peripheral optics will be modified. We compared the peripheral image quality in the eyes of patients with one eye implanted with a monofocal IOL and the fellow eye still with the natural precataract lens. METHODS We used a scannin...

Customized computer models of eyes with intraocular lenses.

We compared experimental wave aberrations in pseudophakic eyes with aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs) to simulate aberrations from numerical ray tracing on customized computer eye models using corneal topography, angle lambda, ocular biometry, IOL geometry, and IOL tilt and decentration measured on the same eyes. We found high correlations between real and simulated aberrations even for the ey...

Intraocular lens implantation position sensitivity as a function of refractive error.

PURPOSE To quantify the change in ocular aberrations due to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation position errors for pseudo-phakic eyes with different refractive errors. METHODS The theoretical part of this work was based on ray-tracing in emmetropic and myopic eye models. The possible misalignments i.e. the decentration, tilt and axial translation, of the IOLs were statistically combined toge...
